An Advance Health Directive (AHD) is a legal document that enables you to provide instructions for possible future medical treatment, to be used if you are unable to communicate your wishes at the time treatment is delivered.
An AHD is often referred to as the instruction given to your loved ones around whether to continue or cease life support, so they are not required to make such a difficult decision.
In Western Australia, a great source of information about an Advance Health Directive can be found on the website of the Office of the Public Advocate. There is a guide and an information sheet to help someone wanting to know more, or put an Advance Health Directive in place.
