Philanthropy: The Gilkison Impact Fund
Ashleigh Pano is a Client Advocate with Gilkison Group.
Many people are interested in giving back to the community, however, are unsure on the most effective way to go about it.
Of course, this is different for each person and depends on their views, interests and emotions to particular causes. For example, individuals who have experienced something misfortunate in their life (or know someone who has) may be more inclined to give to causes that are similar to their own personal experience.
In recent times, there has been quite a big focus on ‘philanthropy’ and you may be wondering what the difference is between philanthropy and charity.
Generally speaking, charity is focused on providing immediate relief to people or causes and is typically driven by emotions. The focus is on relieving the pain of a particular social issue.
Philanthropy on the other hand, focuses on helping people and solving problems over the long term. The focus is on addressing the root cause of social issues rather than relieving the pain.
Here at Gilkison, we’re interested in giving back to the community and in a philanthropic way that helps solve community-based social issues.
Because of this, we’ve started a charitable fund with the Fremantle Foundation, called ‘The Gilkison Impact Fund’. The purpose of this fund is simple – to give back to our community.
Fremantle Foundation is a community-based foundation, which has been around for over ten years. The foundation was established to create a thriving community in Fremantle, Perth and across WA. Fremantle Foundation help individuals, families, businesses, and groups to establish charitable funds to support causes they care about.
One of our organisational values is to ‘Build Community’ and we intend on doing this by positively contributing to the Western Australian community. It is also a way to all come together (rather than donating as individuals) to have the greatest impact on social issues we are passionate about.
The Gilkison Impact Fund is open for anyone within our community to be a part of – either by donating or by contributing in any other way.
The money that is donated to The Gilkison Impact Fund will be pooled and we will make grants once or twice a year (depending on how much is within the fund) to Fremantle Foundation grant seekers. Grant seekers will be chosen by voting amongst committee members of The Gilkison Impact Fund.
Our focus areas include a wide range of social issues such as Health & Wellbeing, Homelessness, Education, Environment, Family and Community, Arts and Culture and Aboriginal Organisations.
If you are interested in being a part of The Gilkison Impact Fund, or if you would like to donate please get in touch.
Otherwise, stay tuned on our community site for updates!
