During quarantine, you might feel unmotivated to do any exercise. It is tempting to choose an afternoon on the couch, in front of the TV rather than going outside and moving your body. Even though you are restricting to spending all your time at home, it is very important to prioritise your physical and mental health by staying active.
By exercising regularly, you can maintain a healthy weight, reduce the risk of health conditions, improve yourself and reduce stress and anxiety. Here are our fitness tips for the whole family during the COVID-19 lockdown.
For the kids
- Host a family Olympics in your backyard.
Each member of the family can pick a country they wish to represent and you can spend the day participating in sports activities at home. Let everyone pick one activity each and a fantastic prize for the winner of the Olympics.
- Dust off your wheels.
Grab the bikes and scooters for an afternoon ride in your neighbourhood. The kids will love getting some fresh air in the lungs, especially if they’ve spent most of their day indoors.
- Plant seeds and watch them grow.
Get in the garden with your kids to plant seeds, prune bushes and watch the garden grow and flourish. This activity is proven to improve moods and decrease anxiety. In addition, gardening gives kids a great learning experience and a sense of purpose and social responsibility.
For the adults
- Stretch and breathe.
Take 30 minutes out of your day to do a yoga session. Not only will it get you moving and building muscle, it will also leave your body and mind feeling calm.
- Think outside the gym.
Try to exercise outside, unless your area is restricted from leaving the house. You can take a walk, jog or lift weights in your backyard.
- Bring the workout class to you.
Your local gym or fitness studio may be closed but you can still exercise at home. Strength training, pilates and cardio online classes, and video content can be found online. Pick one you love and get moving.
Make your health your top priority while you self-isolate to help you stay positive and healthy during the pandemic.
